On May 12, 2008 Moscow University of International Relations (MGIMO) held a formal event to mark 60 years of the diplomatic relations between Russia and Israel and 60 years of the State of Israel. Viatcheslav Kantor, who heads the Russian Jewish Congress, sent a letter to Anatoly Torkunov, MGIMO Rector, welcoming the University’s initiative.
Dear Mr. Torkunov:
I would like to thank you for your invitation to attend and speak at the formal event marking 60 years of the diplomatic relations between Russia and Israel and 60 years of the State of Israel.
I was happy to learn about this initiative of MGIMO. I do believe that this top-tier event will contribute to strengthening relations between Russia and Israel, developing interfaith and intercultural dialogue and promoting tolerance.
To my sincere regret, I am not able to attend this event and deliver an address as I am participating in the World Conference Facing the Future arranged by Shimon Peres on these dates.
