President of the European Jewish Congress Viatcheslav Kantor, as part of the delegation of the World Jewish Congress, visited Vatican and met with Silvio Berlusconi, Prime Minister of Italy.

Various aspects of relations between the State of Israel and the Jewish Diaspora, on the one hand, and Vatican and the Italian Government, on the other, were discussed during the both meetings.

At the meeting with Silvio Berlusconi, Viatcheslav Kantor raised an issue of the need for joint responsibility of the key players in the international arena (the U.S., Russia and EU countries) in the course of counteracting a nuclear threat posed by Iran and the countries seeking to uncontrollably possess nuclear arms. EJC President marked a leading authority of Italy in this sphere, in general, and of Silvio Berlusconi, in particular, as well as his consistent and amicable attitude towards the State of Israel.

In his turn, Silvio Berlusconi announced of his intention to raise the issue of joint responsibility at the next G8 meeting. This meeting will be attended by acceding countries. The situation in these countries should also be a matter of public attention in terms of preserving a non-nuclear world.

“We should not allow a situation when almost 100 years after WWII, in front of everybody’s eyes, one nation will be sacrificed again to remind the whole world that the evil must be nipped in the bud. Unfortunately, development of the military nuclear programme by Iran keeps getting new confirmations. This happens in full view of the whole world. It is inadmissible to leave Israel face to face with this problem,” said Viatcheslav Kantor.
