EJC President Dr. Moshe Kantor met with His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of His Holiness the Pope, on 2 May 2019 in the Vatican, in the framework of dialogue and common initiatives between the European Jewish Congress, the Catholic Church and the Holy See.

Dr. Kantor thanked H.Em. Cardinal Parolin for his dedication to promoting peace and friendship among communities and nations around the world.

On behalf of the Jewish communities of Europe, EJC President Dr. Kantor expressed solidarity with the Christian community in the wake of the recent terror attacks in Sri Lanka that took place on Easter Sunday, the holiest day of the Christian calendar.

“The outrageous attacks that took place in Sri Lanka during Easter provoked anger and deep sorrow within the world Jewish community,” Dr. Kantor said. “We are deeply worried about the fate of Christians around the world. Our prayers are with the victims and their families, and we extend our hand to our Christian brothers to assist you in any way we can in these difficult times”.

H.Em. Cardinal Parolin and Dr. Kantor discussed interfaith work and challenges currently faced by Jewish and Christian communities at times where peaceful co-existence is threatened in the face of growing extremism, xenophobia and antisemitism.

During the audience, Dr. Kantor presented a gift addressed to His Holiness Pope Francis – a portrait of Abbot Galli in liturgical vestments by a renowned French artist Moïse Kisling.
